ABOUT US
The INCAP Research Center for the Prevention of Chronic Diseases (CIIPEC) was established on August 9 2009 with the help of the Centers of Excellence award granted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the United Health Group. CIIPEC was created in response to the Strategic and Action Plan for the Prevention of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases in Central America and Dominican Republic 2007-2021.
During these 11 years of work and continuous development, CIIPEC has carried
out more than 20 research projects, published more than 70 peer reviewed
scientific articles, and created several technical documents. Most of this
evidence has been used to support national and regional policies and national
programs to tackle chronic non -communicable diseases in Central America and
Dominican Republic.
CIIPEC has trained more than 50 junior investigators with an interest in
chronic non-communicable diseases. The center has provided mentorship, research
funding, and infrastructure to these promising professionals and help them
to develop a successful carrier, with the aim of significantly expand the
research capacity and increasing the number of investigators in the region.
Finally, CIIPEC has also worked to strengthen the institutional capacities of
the health and the academic sectors that work on the prevention and control of
chronic non-communicable diseases, particularly by creating and supporting the
Technical Commission of Chronic Diseases and Cancer (CTCC) in the governmental
sector and the Network of Research Institutions in Chronic Diseases (RIIEC) in
the academic sector.
