Overweight, obesity and Covid-19

Guatemala City, December 10, 2020

Dr. Mónica Mazariegos, researcher at INCAP, discusses how the obesogenic environment has been exacerbated during the pandemic and the population actions necessary to promote healthy eating environments.

“The COVID-19 epidemic has highlighted the urgent need to guarantee food systems that promote and allow the entire population access to a diet that is not only sufficient, but also healthy and that facilitate the adoption of healthy food decisions. To improve the food environment and support consumer behavior (in relation to decision-making, purchase and consumption) during this critical moment and to be able to face future health crises with a healthier population, the implementation of food policies such as the frontal labeling of Warning, healthy school feeding policies, restrictions on the marketing of breast milk substitutes and ultra-processed products and taxes on sugary drinks are indispensable” indicates Dr. Mazariegos.
