Results Nutrition and Micronutrients 2011


Current situation

Information about nutritional situation in the countries of the Central America and Dominican Republic region has been updated in recent years through national surveys performance including the National Survey of Micronutrients in Guatemala 2009-2010 with the purpose of determining the nutritional status of micronutrients on reproductive age women, between 15 and 49 years old, and children from 6 to 59 months of age. In Belize (2009-2010) it was also updated the information about the nutritional status of micronutrients. The National Survey of Nutrition was carried out in Costa Rica in 2008 and Panama in 2003. El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic carry out periodically demographic and health surveys, and national studies about nutritional situation.

Stunting on age or chronic malnutrition is the most prevalent problem with notable variability in an wide range with prevalence that overpasses 50% in Guatemala up to values ten times minor as is the case of Costa Rica.

The countries of the region have performed considerable advances in the formulation and implementation of national plans for the reduction of chronic malnutrition, and some of them have conformed intersectorial commissions for the chronic malnutrition reduction. Regarding to work for prevention and control of micronutrient deficiencies, on October the First Meeting of the Regional Commission of Micronutrients and Fortified Foods in Central America and Dominican Republic – CORMAF- was carried out, where the signature of Agreements related with the functioning that was obtained. Officers of the region countries participated, as well as a representative of COMISCA, organized consumer sector, private sector and producer sector of micronutrients premix. Additionally, advances at regional level has been achieved in coordination with the Regional Project of Food Fortification with Folic acid and other micronutrients as a Regional Publication in two components of the projects with the active participation and contribution of the Center for the Prevention of Diseases of United States, Pan American Health Organization PAHO/WHO and the International Organization March of Dimes.

Due to the interest of international cooperation agencies in the implementation of promotion programs of the Food and Nutritional Security at local level, several countries of the region have implemented programs that promote the coordinated work between the producer sector and health sector. In this regards, the Institute participates on pilot initiatives of Food and Nutritional Security at local level in municipalities with high food and nutritional vulnerability of Guatemala to share lately the experiences with other countries of the region.
Learned lessons

During 2011, the Institute achieved retaking work spaces for the strengthening of initiatives and programs on Food and Nutritional Security, including programs of chronic malnutrition reduction by implementing the Initiative of Opportunities Window of 1000 days, and public health for the prevention and control of micronutrients deficiencies through intersectorial alliances with other Secretariats of the Central America Integration System, including the regulated harmonization of fortified food in the Custom Union framework.

INCAP has continued offering technical assistances to regional networks to strengthen the technical-analytical capacities in the region through activities of human resources training and the strengthening of the Regional Commission of Micronutrients and Fortified Food –CORMAF- which will perform a very important role in the sustainability of the Central American Program of Food Fortification with Folic Acid and other Micronutrients as a Regional Public Good actions. The institutional trajectory in the promotion of Food and Nutritional Security at local level has been promoting in different municipalities of the region on which there are plans formulated and implemented for FNS promotion.

Main challenges for 2012

Regarding to technical assistance activities to support countries on acute malnutrition reductions, the Unit will promote the institutional strengthening for procedures and assessment of the acute malnutrition reductions programs in the countries of the region. Regarding to Food and Nutritional Security actions at local level, it is anticipated the development of a communication strategy about the achieved results and educational material for FNS decision makers.

To strengthen existent alliances and promote creation of other key institutions at both regional and national level.

Mobilization of financial and technical resources to support national and regional networks that receive technical assistances from INCAP in different areas of feeding and nutrition. Continue with the implementation of the Plan for the strengthening of the institutional analytical capacities in food and nutritional biochemistry with the purpose that they can continue providing the technical cooperation required by the countries.
