Main results


Achieved in recent years:

1. INCAP, as a Food and Nutrition Security specialized body of the Central American Integration System SICA, coordinates, harmonizes and supports strategies and initiatives of the institutions of various subsystems of SICA, of organized civil society, private sector and international cooperation in the region, resulting in the formulation of the Food and Nutrition Policy of Central America and Dominican Republic.

2. Articulation of regional networks in various areas of food and nutrition, including: Regional network of Laboratories of Food and Nutritional Biochemistry, Regional Network of Research Institutions for Chronic Disease-RIIEC-; Regional Commission on Micronutrient and Fortified Foods of Central America and Dominican Republic CORMAF, Regional Technical Commission of Chronic Diseases-CTCC.

3. Agreements and strategic alliances with institutions of the Central American Integration System SICA: Central American and Dominican Republic Higher University Council, and CSUCA and Commission for Scientific and Technological Development of Central America and Panama -CTCAP-

4. Agreements with academia through the CSUCA with the universities in Central America.

5. Development of research projects in different areas of food and nutrition in Central America and Dominican Republic through agreements with universities and research centers such as: Johns Hopkins, Harvard University, University of Michigan, RAND Corporation.

6. INCAP has a collection of scientific and technical documents (bibliographic, audiovisual and electronic) on the subject of FNS in the region, systematized, organized and at the service of the public in the Virtual Library in health and food security and nutrition - BVSSAN-.

7. The institute works systematically to integrate the network of institutions that produce information on FNS at a regional level, in order to have more scientific and technical information on food and nutrition

8. Implementation of the Education Portal of INCAP, as a virtual environment that incorporates information and communication technologies (ICTs) for learning processes. Through this portal, we apply best practices in distance education, based on educational design enriched with teaching resources of Web 2.0 and the Internet (application of technological packages and development of learning objects for e-learning processes) with an interactive teaching model for the collective construction of knowledge.

9. Development of seven (7) courses and virtual diplomas that enabled the production of literature on the topics of Land Management, water management and environmental risk with a focus on multiculturalism and gender, in the following documents:

• 37 municipal characterizations

  • 37 monographs of equal number of municipalities Central America
  • Thematic Atlas  of the basins of the municipalities in Central America
  • Manual of Cartography
  • Teaching Units on Food and Nutrition
  • Teaching Units on Food and Nutrition Security
  • Teaching Units  on Health Care and Nutrition

10. Development of micro enterprise agribusiness with incorporation of women in municipalities in the border area of Nicaragua and Costa Rica to produce healthy and safe food, strengthening the technical capacity on management and marketing of rural enterprises in those municipalities.

11. Consolidation of national programs of food fortification with micronutrients such as iron, iodine, vitamin A, zinc and folic acid, through the promotion and support for the harmonization of national policies, standards, regulation and quality control systems for fortified food and monitoring of national epidemiological surveillance of diseases preventable by food fortification

12. Support for the design, development and evaluation of national food and nutrition. As technical assistance for the generation of information systems to food and nutrition monitoring regional and country level, which allows management decisions.

13. The creation of the INCAP Comprehensive Center for the prevention of Chronic Diseases Integral Centre CIIPEC which operates according to the structure approved by the Directing Council of INCAP.

14. The creation of the Laboratory of Physiology and Body Composition, LAFICC, to strengthen research and capacities of human resources and provide technical cooperation.
