General objective

Evaluate cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors in Guatemalan children and adolescents livin in peri-urban areas from Guatemala city, and comparing them with the changes over time in body composition.

Methodology

Longitudinal study with subjetcs who have participated in three previous studies at CIIPEC. This study included the following measurements:

Arteria stiffness: pulse wave velocity and augmentation index

Physical activity patterns: accelerometry and pedometers

Physical fitness: peak oxygen uptake and 6 minutes walk test.

Behavioral factors: food frequency questionnaire and sociodemographic factors.

Body composition: 4-compartment model to estimate body fat percentage

Total energy expenditure: minute by minute heart rate monitoring technique.

Other cardiometabolic factors: serum insulin, plasma glucose, serum homocysteine, serum lipid profile, blood pressure
