CIIPEC’s research work is consistent with the focal working topic of Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama –INCAP-, associated to Diet-related Chronic Diseases (DRCDs) and the role of the different dietary factors (macronutrients, micronutrients, early nutrition, among others) and energetic factors (energy density of foods, level of physical activity, etc.). These actions are carried out based on the Strategic Plan for DRCD prevention, designed by INCAP and approved by the Ministries of Health of the Institute’s Eight Member Countries. This plan is in line with PAHO’s Regional Strategy for Chronic Diseases and WHO’s Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.
Chronic non-communicable diseases are a leading cause of death and in Central America these are associated to age, unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, smoking and alcoholism. The work related to this topic should be done with the purpose of better understanding the role of the different factors that contribute to chronic diseases, such as dietary factors (macronutrients, micronutrients, early nutrition, among others), as well as energetic factors (energy density of foods, level of physical activity, etc.).
